The APUK scholarship is open to anyone and everyone regardless of sexual orientation. Applicants must be a current and active member of APUK.APUK scholarships are intended to further the charity’s aims of building, supporting and uniting the LGBTQ+ aviation community, and making aviation more inclusive, accessible and safer for all. We are committed to supporting anyone who aligns with and can help further those aims.

What can I apply for?

We are excited to share that our scholarship can be used to assist funding in a variety of ways that align with our aims. This includes, but not limited to:Training costs (including flight training, practical and theory courses);Personal or professional development;Outreach, mentoring or STEM projects;Examination and test fees;Medical, licensing and registration fees;Equipment and training materials;Travel and accommodation.The maximum you can apply for in the 2026 cycle is £5,000.

How can I prepare for the application?

The application consists of various sections including personal details, about you, requested project detials, your motivation and optional references. There is a variety of short answers, short essay questions and file uploads to ensure we fully appreciate you, what you're applying for and the reasons behind it.To best prepare we recommend you prepare the following prior to starting the application:Gather any information about the proposed course/activity/project including details, schedules and cost breakdownsThink about why you are applying, why it matters to you, what barriers it would break, how you have prepared and what you hope to do after the scholarshipThink about how your proposed activity will help further the aims of APUK Get a personal or professional referee and ask them for a statement to support your application (optional)

How do I apply?

The scholarship window is open from August 1st to August 31st and you can apply using the link on this page. The form is built within google forms and requires you to log in using a google account prior to applying. This allows you to save your progress throughout the application and return at a later date.Please ensure you save your progress whilst applying to ensure that your hard work is not lost!

How does the partial funding work?

We are committed to supporting as many applicants as possible and have introduced "partial funding". During the application, the applicant can select the requested amount and if they would accept a lower offer of support. If so, they will be asked what the minimum amount that could be offered to allow the proposed activity to go ahead.Every endeavour will be made to ensure the maximum amount of support can be provided to each applicant, however, partial funding will ensure that we can also support the maximum amount of people.Important notes:No applicant will be advantaged/disadvantaged by selecting if they will or will not accept a reduced amount;All applications will be ranked on merit before allocating funds;An applicant must receive the minimum requested amount for a lower ranking applicant to receive any funds;A lower ranking applicant should not be awarded more than a higher ranking applicant, unless the higher ranking applicant is requesting a lower amount.

What happens after I apply?

After the application window closes, the Scholarship Committee will initially apply our stage one screening which will verify:The application is free from errors/omissions and is verified trueThe application meets the elidgibility criteriaThe application meets the minimum screening score (a light in-touch assessment to ensure a minimum standard has been met)Results from Stage One will be communicated once all applications have been screened. Unfortunately due to the volume of applications, those not passing through stage one will not receive specific feedback as to why.Successful applications will then pass to stage two screening which is a full assessment designed to evaluate the merit of each application and rank them for funding. This stage is competency based and uses an approved rubric to evaluate the scores ensuring fairness, transparency and standardised scoring. Once all applicantions have been ranked, the scholarship committee will then allocate the funding in line with our standard operating procedures, which includes our procedures in place for reduced funding. Find out more in the FAQ above.Successful applicants will have the result communicated via email and phone and will have 72 hours to accept the scholarship proposal. If no response is received, APUK reserve the right to redistribute the funds to other applicants. For those that are not successful at stage two, results will be communicated along with individual feedback.

What happens if I am successful?

Successful applicants will have their result communicated to them via phone and email and will have 72 hours to accept the scholarship proposal. This will include the amount being offered and any special terms associated.Funds will normally be transferred directly to the supplier of the proposed activity/project and not to the awardee. This will require an invoice to the Charity of the scholarship amount and written confirmation of how the funds are to be used.Only in exceptional circumstances, when approved by the charity board of trustees, will the Charity reimburse the awardee directly. This will only be made to reimburse an already paid expense relating directly to the scholarship activity/project and on receipt of an invoice.All approved funds must be used within 12 months from the offer date unless otherwise agreed with the scholarship committee and board of trustees. If the training is not completed or the award is not completely used, the scholarship comittee reserves the right to redistribute the award.

All of our Friday events are located in the convenient area of Balham! Accessible via the Northern Line and national rail, with the station only a one minute walk away from our venue! Only 25 minutes from Soho via the Northern line.

Please only bring what you can carry, whilst we will have a small storage space on the float we have almost 100 people joining us, so space is limited!

Check the weather on the day in case of rain or shine! Raincoats, hats, sunglasses and suncream may all be needed!

Limited water and "refreshments" will be provided. We recommend you bring your own supply of refreshments for the route - as ours really are limited!
