Aviation Pride UK: More Than a Pilots' Organisation
If you've ever felt like aviation wasn't quite made for you, like you were scanning the room at an industry event wondering where you fit in, you're not alone. And more importantly, you don't have to stay in that feeling. Because what we've built at Aviation Pride UK is something far bigger, far warmer, and far more wide-ranging than most people initially expect.
We hear it often: "Oh, is APUK just for pilots?" The short answer is no. The longer answer is what this post is all about.
A Community That Reflects the Full Width of Aviation
Aviation is not a single job. It's an entire world of interconnected roles, passions, and pathways. And our community reflects that beautifully.
Yes, we welcome pilots. But we also welcome air traffic controllers, cabin crew, ground operations staff, engineers, aviation enthusiasts, office-based professionals, recreational fliers, and students who are just starting to dream about what a career in the sky might look like. If aviation is part of your life in any way, and you identify as LGBTQ+ (or you're an ally who genuinely cares about inclusion), there is a place here for you.
Our mission has always been to Build, Support, and Unite the LGBTQ+ aviation community across the UK and beyond. That three-word mission isn't a tagline; it's the honest shape of everything we do. Every event we organise, every mentorship conversation, every story we share publicly, it all comes back to those three words.
What "Building Community" Actually Looks Like
We're a registered charitable incorporated organisation, recognised by the Charity Commission in England and Wales. But more than that, we're a volunteer-run family. Every single person on our board of trustees has experienced, first-hand, what it feels like to want to belong in this industry and to wonder whether that was really possible. That lived experience is baked into everything we create.
Building community, for us, means showing up consistently. It means being present at Pride celebrations across the UK, from London and Manchester to Birmingham, Oxford, Crawley, and Shrewsbury. It means running our own Inclusion Summit, a dedicated space for meaningful conversation and genuine connection within the aviation sector. And it means being present online and in person so that someone just entering the industry can find us when they need us most.
We've been growing since our founding spirit took hold in 2016, and that growth has been organic, people-first, and rooted in authentic relationships rather than corporate PR.
Supporting Careers at Every Stage
One of the things we're most proud of is that we don't just serve established professionals. We're here for the enthusiast who's not sure if aviation is for them, the student wondering whether they'll be accepted once they qualify, and the experienced professional who has never had a community like this before.
Our educational series, Final Approach, is one example of how we bring real value to members at different stages of their journey. It's designed to inform, inspire, and equip people with knowledge about the industry, careers, and the broader landscape of LGBTQ+ inclusion in aviation.
We also offer mentorship opportunities, because sometimes what you need isn't a workshop or a webinar. Sometimes you need to speak to someone who has walked a similar path and come out the other side feeling confident and proud. That kind of peer-to-peer support is something we actively nurture within our membership.
If you're earlier in your journey and looking for guidance, or if you're further along and want to give back by mentoring someone else, there is a role for you within our community.
Visibility Matters More Than You Might Think
Representation in aviation isn't just a feel-good concept. It has a real, practical impact on who enters the industry, who stays, and who thrives. When LGBTQ+ professionals are visible, when their stories are told and their voices are heard, it sends a signal to the next generation that this industry is for them too.
That's why storytelling and advocacy sit right at the centre of what we do alongside the social events and networking. We amplify LGBTQ+ voices in aviation because that visibility creates ripples. It changes what young people believe is possible. It shifts culture slowly but surely inside organisations. And it helps current professionals feel seen and valued in their day-to-day working lives.
We also connect our members to a broader global network through our affiliations with the National Gay Pilots Association (NGPA) and the European Pride in Aviation Network (EPAN). Aviation is an international industry, and it matters that our community has those wider connections.
Driving Inclusion Across the Industry
We believe aviation should be welcoming and equitable for everyone, regardless of who they are or who they love. That's not a radical position; it's simply the right one. And we work to make it a reality through a combination of grassroots community action and thoughtful advocacy.
For corporate and business aviation professionals, this work carries particular weight. The private and business aviation sector is built on relationships, reputation, and trust. Inclusive workplaces and inclusive industry cultures aren't just ethical; they're also good for business, good for talent retention, and good for the long-term health of the sector. We're proud to serve members who understand that and who want to be part of an industry that reflects it.
There are also volunteer opportunities for those who want to roll up their sleeves and help build what we're creating together. Everything APUK does is powered by people who genuinely care, and there is always room for more passionate hands.
You Belong Here
Whether you're a seasoned aviation professional, a curious enthusiast, or someone somewhere in between, the message from us is straightforward: you belong here. No one should feel isolated or underrepresented because of who they are, and that is something we are committed to changing with everything we have.
Aviation Pride UK is a community, a network, a support system, and a home. It's the kind of place where you can be completely yourself and be celebrated for it.
If any part of this resonates with you, we'd love for you to come and find us. Explore our membership, browse our events, read our members' stories, and see what we're about. Visit us at aviationpride.org.uk and take the first step towards a community that is genuinely glad you're here.
