LGBTQ+ Voices Shaping Every Corner of Aviation

LGBTQ+ Voices Shaping Every Corner of Aviation

There is a version of aviation that many of us grew up imagining: a world of gleaming cockpits, crackling radio frequencies, and the kind of freedom that only comes when the ground falls away beneath you. But for LGBTQ+ people across the industry, that dream has often come wrapped in a quieter, more complicated question: Can I truly be myself here?

That question is one we know intimately. It is the reason Aviation Pride UK exists, and it is the driving force behind everything we do to build, support, and unite the LGBTQ+ aviation community across the UK and beyond.

The answer, increasingly, is yes. And the people proving it work in every role aviation has to offer.

From the Flight Deck: Pilots Finding Their Place

The image of the airline captain has long been a narrow one. For decades, LGBTQ+ pilots navigated not only airspace but also a professional culture that could feel unwelcoming, even hostile. Our own board members know this first-hand. Richard Walker, our Vice-Chair, began his first flying job in the late 1990s genuinely uncertain whether he would be accepted for who he is. Grant Walker, another trustee, felt the same weight when he entered aviation back in 1996.

What has changed is not just legislation or policy, though those matter enormously. What has changed is visibility. When an LGBTQ+ pilot can see someone like themselves in the flight deck, the message is clear: you belong here. Our Chair, Will Robson, has spoken openly about needing to see himself represented in the industry before he felt safe enough to come out. That kind of representation is not incidental; it is foundational.

We work to ensure that every LGBTQ+ person pursuing a flying career has access to mentoring, networking, and a community of people who understand exactly what that journey feels like.

In the Tower: Air Traffic Control and the Quiet Backbone of Aviation

Air traffic controllers are, in many ways, the unsung architects of safe skies. They work in high-pressure environments where precision and communication are everything, and where personal identity can sometimes feel like something to leave at the door.

It does not have to be that way. Our upcoming Behind the Scenes: Manchester ATC Visit on Sunday 12th April 2026 is a perfect example of how we bring the LGBTQ+ community into spaces where they can connect, ask questions, and see the breadth of what aviation careers look like. These kinds of events matter because they make the industry feel accessible rather than exclusive.

On the Ground and in the Air: Every Role Counts

Aviation is far more than pilots and controllers. It is engineers, ground crew, dispatchers, cabin crew, air traffic students, rotary pilots, general aviation enthusiasts, and the many professionals who keep the whole operation moving. Our trustee Peter Yardley-Jones represents this beautifully; he is a champion of the general aviation and rotary communities, carrying a lifelong connection to the industry through his family and now giving back by making those spaces safer for LGBTQ+ people.

Carl Hemming, another of our trustees, recently achieved his Private Pilot Licence, a childhood dream he describes with the kind of joy that reminds us why aviation captures hearts in the first place. He is now focused on growing the LGBTQ+ general aviation community in the Midlands, proving that inclusion is not just a city-centre conversation.

Corporate partners are stepping up too. AirTanker, the Oxfordshire-based airline providing air-to-air refuelling for the RAF, has launched its own LGBTQ+ network as part of a broader inclusivity programme. Their partnership with us reflects a growing understanding across the industry: a workforce where people feel free to be themselves is a stronger, safer, and more innovative workforce.

Military Aviation: An Evolving Story

The military aviation community carries a particularly significant history for LGBTQ+ inclusion. Our trustee Mike Caffrey enlisted in the Royal Air Force in 2000, just as the ban on LGBTQ+ personnel was being lifted. Even with that legal change, it took him years to feel comfortable being his authentic self at work. His commitment now is to ensure that no one coming behind him has to carry that same weight alone.

This is the kind of lived experience that gives our organisation its depth and its heart. We are not an organisation built on theory. We are built on real stories, real struggles, and real moments of belonging.

Looking Ahead: A Packed 2026 Calendar

One of the most practical ways we build community is by showing up, together, throughout the year. Our 2026 events calendar is already full of opportunities to connect, celebrate, and learn. Beyond the Manchester ATC visit in April, we have the London Social (dinner and drag with Irene Bru) on 25th April, Birmingham Pride on 23rd May, the Student Social 2026 in Oxford on 6th June, and Pride in the Skies 2026 in London on 3rd July. Later in the year, Crawley Pride on 22nd August and our flagship Inclusion Summit 2026 in London on 15th October round out a calendar that spans the country and reflects the full spectrum of our community.

These are not just social gatherings. They are professional development opportunities, mentoring moments, and spaces where an LGBTQ+ aviation student might meet the person who changes the trajectory of their career.

Why Partnership and Membership Matter

Our work is only possible because of the people and organisations who choose to stand with us. Whether through our formal partner programme, volunteering, or simply becoming a member, every act of solidarity moves the industry forward. We are an international affiliate of both the National Gay Pilots Association (NGPA) and the European Pride in Aviation Network (EPAN), which means our members are connected to a global family of LGBTQ+ aviation professionals.

If you are an LGBTQ+ person working in aviation, training for a career in the skies, or simply passionate about making this industry better for everyone, there is a place for you with us. And if you are a business or organisation that wants to demonstrate a genuine, meaningful commitment to inclusion rather than just a statement on a website, we would love to talk.

The skies genuinely are for everyone. Come and be part of the community proving it every single day at Aviation Pride UK.
